“It’s just water vapour”

This is the one that’s simply false, and it’s worth clearing first because a lot of other reasoning rests on it.

There is no water in it. What you inhale is an aerosol — fine liquid droplets suspended in air — produced by heating propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine along with flavourings and, usually, nicotine. Aerosol and vapour are not the same thing, and the difference matters: droplets carry things into your lungs that a true vapour wouldn’t.

Analyses of e-cigarette aerosol have consistently found more than the four ingredients on the label. Heating the coil generates compounds that weren’t in the liquid, including carbonyls such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, and traces of metals — nickel, chromium, lead — that come off the heating element itself. Concentrations are generally far lower than in cigarette smoke, and they vary enormously with device, power setting and how hot the coil runs. But “much less than cigarette smoke” is a different claim from “water.”

Dosing is invisible. Ask a smoker how many cigarettes they had yesterday and they’ll be close. Ask a vaper how many puffs and they’ll be off by hundreds. Most people who count for the first time find their real number is far higher than their estimate.

The catch is in the word “helps.” Vaping works as a quit aid when it’s a bridge — you switch, you stabilise, you step the nicotine strength down, you stop. It stops being a quit aid the moment it becomes a destination, which is where a very large number of people quietly ended up: they successfully stopped smoking two years ago and have been on a pod ever since, with no plan and no end date.

If that’s you, nothing has gone wrong exactly. You made a real improvement. But the bridge only pays off if you cross it.

“I’ll just gain weight anyway”

You might gain some. The average is smaller than people fear — typically on the order of a few kilos over the long run, and a good part of that is the first months. Nicotine mildly suppresses appetite and slightly raises metabolic rate, so both change when you stop, and food tasting properly again for the first time in years does not help.

But hold the comparison honestly. The cardiovascular benefit of stopping is not close to being outweighed by a few kilos — the risk reduction from quitting is large, and the risk added by that amount of weight is small. Trading a serious risk for a minor one is a good trade.

Practical version: don’t run a diet and a quit simultaneously. One hard thing at a time. Eat regularly during the first weeks, because low blood sugar feels almost identical to nicotine withdrawal and you will not be able to tell them apart. Walk after meals. Deal with weight in month three, if it’s still a question by then.

“The damage is already done”

The most expensive myth of the lot, because it’s the one that ends the conversation.

Lung function improves measurably over the following weeks and months. Excess coronary heart disease risk falls to roughly half a continuing smoker’s within a year, and lung cancer risk to roughly half within ten. Someone who quits at sixty gains years compared with someone who doesn’t.

Stopping earlier is better. Stopping now is better than not stopping. Both of those are true at the same time.
